Merging Ancient and Modern Science...
Most people think of “stress” as a modern problem—the end result of dealing with fast-paced work lives, traffic jams, and busy family schedules. But stress, and all the ways it can affect our quality of life, is a human condition that’s been around throughout history. Consequently, so has the quest to find ways to manage and balance the stress response.
Guess what. Everyone is under stress. If you’re alive and breathing, you’re experiencing some form of stress right now. Everyone needs to include “stress management” in their ongoing personal health plan and lifestyle. But how many people do you know who really take their stress levels seriously? The ambiguous nature of the word “stress” tends to let us off the hook. So, first off, let’s better define this term.
What is stress?
It’s easiest to begin by understanding “stressors”—the forces that can cause a stress response in the body. A stressor is anything that affects the body’s ability to maintain homeostasis or optimal balance. Generally, stressors can be broken down into five major categories:
Mental – personal thought patterns, repetitive self-talk, self-image chatter, and contemplating major life changes and overwhelming responsibilities
Emotional – the whole gamut of emotion, both pleasant and unpleasant (ie –anger, joy, longing, irritability, concern, fear, sadness, lust, grief, excitement)
Physical – includes strenuous or repetitive activity at work or in our exercise routines; it also refers to nutritional issues, sleep patterns, pregnancy, health challenges, injury, and anything else that directly affects the body
Environmental – all the elements in our day-to-day environments including climate and temperature changes; electromagnetic radiation (ie – wi-fi networks and electronics); sunlight; microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, molds, and parasites); nutrient-depleted, heavy-metal contaminated, GMO, or irradiated food sources; household and industrial chemicals in our homes and foods; and stimulants or controlled substances
Spiritual – all our internal wrestling with personal direction and life purpose
Typically, when we think of stress, we reflect on the psychological or emotional aspects– mental chatter, the negative emotions such as anger, sadness, and anxiety. However, stress is much broader. As you can see above, everything, in one-way or another, causes stress.
To better understand stress, it is important to look at the work of Hans Seyle, who is widely considered to be “the father of stress research.” He defines stress as, “the non-specific response of the body to any demand made upon it.” To clarify, a “non-specific response” means that stress can come from a wide variety of stressors.
Selye went on to develop the General Adaptation Syndrome. Along with hypothesizing that stress is a major cause of health challenges, he said that, with any stressor, the body responds with a predictable biological pattern to restore homeostasis. He also determined that the body’s ability to maintain homeostasis depended largely on what he called “adaptive energy”—the body’s innate ability to adapt to a stressor and restore homeostasis. He observed that this adaptive energy can decline when there is constant exposure to stressors.
According to Selye, our response to stress passes through three stages:
1) Alarm Phase – the initial response stage. The nervous system, endocrine system, and the body’s general reserves are put into action to deal with the stressor and maintain homeostasis.
2) Resistance Phase – the stage where we either adapt (or not). At this point, we metabolize stress as either eustress or distress. Eustress is a good thing; it is anabolic in nature, meaning it strengthens us—we can grow from it.
3) Exhaustion Phase – the stage we proceed to if we metabolize the stressor as distress. Distress is catabolic in nature — it breaks us down.
When experiencing stressors, the body faces a critical juncture in Phase 2. Like a fork in the road, we either proceed to enhance our quality of life, longevity, and whole health, or head downhill into Exhaustion Phase. The KEY that influences which path the body takes is the amount of adaptive energy that is stored up or spent in our day-to-day living.
Abundant adaptive energy directly relates to our ability to live, love, and create.
So, what is adaptive energy?
Think back to the last time you got a small cut on your hand. It qualified as a small physical stressor. But, it probably healed without any effort on your part. Well, the unseen force or energy that did this miraculous feat is your adaptive energy. The Chinese refer to it as qi, the Japanese call it ki, and the East Indians name it prana. We, Western Holistic Physicians, refer to it as LIFE-force or bio-energy.
Whatever name used, it is the power behind true health, wellness, longevity, optimum functioning of all the body's systems, and a high quality of life; hence, LIFE-force or the FORCE of LIFE!
Holistic Physicians, Spiritual Masters and even some Self-Help Gurus know LIFE-force is the key to holistic healing, personal development, and spiritual growth.
When our LIFE-force is strong, then we quickly recover from the stressor and get stronger.
When our LIFE-force is low, then we begin to metabolize the stressor as distress. Exhaustion phase sets in and leaves us even more vulnerable to the next stressor.
THE SOLUTION...
Low and behold, nature has provided for us herbs and foods that encourage the body’s balanced recovery from day-to-day stressors. Scientists coined the terms “adaptogen” and “adaptogenic” for plants that support the body’s ability to “adapt to” stress, enhancing its adaptive energy.
Adaptogens are a very unique and specialized group of superfoods made famous in the West only recently. In 1947, a Russian Scientist, N.V. Lazarevs, gave these herbs their name, adaptogens, after noticing their amazing effects on helping the body adapt to stress.
Similarly, in 1958, I.I.Brekhman, a Russian holistic medical doctor, and his colleague I.V. Dardymov, defined these amazing herbs based on how they supported the body’s ability to naturally return to homeostasis. Adaptogens have been used for their powerful antioxidant effects, and they gained even more fame when Russian athletes used them in the Olympics to enhance their athletic recovery process — so that they could train harder.
What classifies an herb as an adaptogen?
Chinese herbologists frequently use several parts of a plant (ie – leaves, stem, flower, roots) and also rely on ingredients from animal and mineral sources all of which are considered “herbs.” For an herb to be “adaptogenic,” it must provide a normalizing and balancing effect. It should express a general tonifying influence—not over-stimulating or inhibiting any normal functions. In essence, they are focused on maintaining good health rather than fixing problems.
"Adaptogens help the body regulate itself," says Harriet Beinfield, a licensed acupuncturist and Chinese herbalist who co-authored, Between Heaven and Earth: A Guide to Chinese Medicine, (Ballantine, 1991) with husband Efrem Korngold, a doctor of Oriental medicine and co-director of a Chinese medical clinic in San Francisco.
When it comes to stress response, the body can wind up at the dual extremes of being charged up or completely fatigued. Whatever the case, researchers find that adaptogenic herbs help the body steer itself back from fatigue or over-excited states. Adaptogens promote the body’s inherent ability to return to “center.”*
In other words, adaptogens help the body stay in balance!*
Most of the known adaptogenic herbs flourish in extreme environments. Be it in below zero temperatures or high altitudes, these plants thrive by developing phytochemicals that help them withstand the onslaught of the harsh environmental stressors. Adaptogens pass those health-promoting phytochemicals on to us when we eat them.
Again, the KEY...
Adaptogens enhance our LIFE-force! When LIFE-force is abundant, we have the energy to quickly adapt to, and even grow through, life’s daily stressors.
ADAPTOGENS ROCK!
Most adaptogens also help support the body’s healthy balanced immune response. Moreover, adaptogens are loaded with micronutrients (vitamins, minerals, enzymes, phytochemicals, antioxidants, etc.). These powerful herbs support overall well-being and longevity through their ability to enhance LIFE-force, energy, and endurance. Plus, they help support healthy function of the adrenals glands, which are the body’s primary mechanism for responding and adapting to stressors, as Dr. Edward Wallace notes in his article for Nutrition Science News, “Adaptogenic Herbs: Nature's Solution To Stress.” That translates into noticeable support for athletic recovery and balanced recovery from day-to-day stress too. Adaptogens help your body maintain a centered, grounded state, whatever challenges come your way.*
Regularly consuming adaptogenic herbs can support whole health in a variety of areas:
- Support balanced immune system response*
- Maintain healthy energy levels, stable mood, and sleep cycles*
- Support the body’s balanced response to daily stressors*
- Promote healthy pH levels*
- Support cardiovascular health*
- Promote joint and muscle health*
- Support healthy digestion*
- Provide antioxidant support*
- Support healthy levels of LIFE-force*
...so yes, Adaptogens ROCK!
